Nahyun Kim
Nahyun Kim is a feminist woman of color artist from South Korea based in Rhode Island and Seoul. The artist practices research-based and socially engaged art using performance, audience participation, seminar, workshop, object and video installation, and (collective) writing. Her recent and ongoing project Contemporary Ways of Seeing (2020~) started with seminars on feminist art history and a parody art-making session over Zoom, where each participant uses a customized avatar. Now, the project is followed by a research project, funded by the Art Council of Korea, on the possibilities of online-based socially engaged art and its documentation using Zoom, virtual avatar, and video editing. Those projects are founded upon the political context that women and feminists in South Korea are being attacked in person and online and live in constant fear of them. The projects aim to advocate for Korean women's and marginalized beings' access to safety, privacy, and language to express their being and meanings of life.
